"It’s such an important event for the culture, there have many competitors who have gone on to achieve great things." - DJ Semtex

Turntablists, selectors and beat junkies of the world unite; the world’s most prestigious, longest running and number one leading DJ authority DMC brings the final chapter of 2017’s annual worldwide competitions to a triumphant new London venue.
Proud, longtime partners, Rane present The 2017 DMC World DJ Championship Finals on Sunday 1st October at KOKO, in Camden, London, UK.
Paving the way of many of today’s UK hip hop stars, London Posse continue their 30th anniversary celebrations, with a special performance at this year’s DMC Finals, who reunite following a split in 1996. Having formed in 1986, London Posse – consisting of BionicDJ BiznizzSipho and Rodney P - dramatically changed the face of UK hip hop by bringing a distinctly British edge to an otherwise American dominated genre. Speaking on the state of UK hip hop at the time, Rodney P has said, “there was no rap scene. There was a hip hop scene. It was more about the other elements, the hip hop vibe and lifestyle.”
As well as the hip hop heroes, some of the UK’s finest turntablists and DMC alumni will be performing a tribute set to London DJ Ben Smith aka DJ Daredevil who tragically passed away after a public battle with cancer earlier in the year. Taking to the stage in memory of Daredevil will be his brother MatmanPrime Cuts from Scratch Perverts, 1989 DMC World champion Cutmaster Swift, 4 x DMC Champion Mr Switch, DJ Blakey who has toured with the likes of NasJay Z and Jurassic 5DJ Muzzell, 2013 Supremacy World Champion Ritchie Ruftone and DJ Woody, who returns after a stunning live set in 2016.
The DMC World Finals will see the best DJs from all over the world gather in London to compete for what are, in DJing terms, the ultimate accolades and grand titles. A cut above their fellow national adversaries, the stage is all that remains to be conquered. Having survived elimination, the true test of ability comes to the international table, where the flavours of the world are pit against one another in a showcase of the most formidable DJ talent. The 2017 competition sees two titles up for grabs; DMC World Champion and the DMC Battle Champion.
Celebrating 33 years, DMC has come a long way since 1985 and has cemented its place at the heart of DJ culture. First won by young Londoner Roger Johnson, since then winners have included some of the most powerful entities that have stood behind the 1’s+2’s, legends such as a then 15 year old A-Track, Q-BertMixmaster Mike, DJ Craze, Cutmaster Swift, Roc Raida and DJ Noize. Over the years the event has played host to a number of significant attendees, from Run DMC andJanet Jackson to James Brown and Public Enemy.

Having previously filled the likes of Wembley Arena, Brixton Academy, the Royal Albert Hall and the Millennium Dome, the prestigious venue soaked in history, KOKO Camden has been awarded the privilege. KOKO has played host to some of the most legendary of gigs in memory, from The Rolling Stones and Prince to Amy Winehouse and Kanye West.
A higher standard of the art form will be found under no other roof. A continuous and pioneering effort to make DMC the frontier of turntablism once again makes no compromises. Further details with special guests and announcements are to be made over the coming weeks. It will be the most important event this October so be sure to keep your ears and eyes peeled for more information!

Nozstock the Hidden Valley 2017 line up announced

SYS favourite Nozstock The Hidden Valley festival has just announced its second wave of names, plus a brand new stage, The Elephant’s Grave and the new area Bluejay’s Jazz Lounge.

Curated by the father and daughter duo of Noz and Ella and a huge extended family who work across the entire festival, there’s a unique charm and energy to Nozstock unlike anything else in the country. Reaching its momentous 19th year this summer, Nozstock is an enchanting adventure nestled in gorgeous rolling hills.

The Sugarhill GangNew artists include The Sugarhill Gang; widely credited with igniting the hip-hop scene and bringing it into the mainstream in the 1970s, The Sugarhill Gang are an American hip-hop group famed for their iconic 1979 hit Rapper's Delight. With the first rap single to become a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, they remain an irresistible force in music and are set to have Nozstock bouncing in the summer. Levelz; capturing their idiosyncratic manner. Levelz are a multi-faceted collective of MCs, DJs and producers who have been feted as Wu Tang Clan meets Happy Mondays; their eclectically vibrant sounds segue between grime, dubstep and hip-hop to drum & bass and house and jazz. Goldie Lookin’ Chain; the lyrical satarists who remain sharply humorous and controversial, satirically skewering much of today’s consumer society, cultural trends, and railing at life in general and Freestylers; who have covered a full 360 degrees in the bass music genre over their 20 year career, having played all the biggest festivals and most talked about nightclubs around the world, they still retain their keen edge.

They join the already announced Happy Mondays, Mungo’s Hi-Fi, Krafty Kuts & Dynamite MC plus many more. Check out our review of the 2016 edition and get ready for the biggest and best Nozstock yet!
